Egypt

Trained as an engineer, Yasmin Helal started her career at a multinational company, while playing professional basketball; yet deep down something was missing. It wasn’t until she met a man begging on the street who could not afford to send his daughters to school that her focus turned to the growing number of Egyptian children who lack a basic education. Even children who did attend school often emerged illiterate and unprepared for life. “The problem with education is that authority is centralized,” says Yasmin. “The focus on memorization and standardized testing fails to address the diverse needs and aspirations of the learner”.
